Derek was born and raised in Winnipeg, Manitoba. As a child growing up he loved playing baseball, and through this passion he obtained a scholarship to play college baseball in Bottineau, North Dakota. After a short-lived playing career, he returned to Winnipeg and worked at TransX for about a decade in various roles within the corporation. It was during that time he started to pursue his accounting degree through the CGA program.

In 2012 he relocated to Thunder Bay with his wife and child, where shortly after he began his employment with LCPS. In 2014 he graduated from Laurentian University with a bachelor of commerce degree and later that year was admitted to the CPA membership.

Derek is an avid sports fan with a particular passion for rooting for the Dallas Cowboys. During the summer months he can be found out on the local diamonds playing softball.

Derek is currently involved in many community organizations:

• Board member of the St. Joseph's Foundation of Thunder Bay
• Chapter president of the Canadian Condominium Institute (Northwestern Ontario chapter)
• Board member of Thunder Bay International Baseball Association
